In Java, the javaioFile class represents a file using a name instead of a file handle, so it is effectively impossible to avoid file access race conditions Don't write privileged programs with Java Insecure Temporary Files The standard C library contains many different mechanisms for creating temporary files These functions approach the problem in one of two ways Some functions attempt to create a unique symbolic filename that the programmer can then use to create a temporary file Other functions go a bit further and attempt to open a file descriptor, too Both types of functions are susceptible to a variety of vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to inject malicious content into a program, cause the program to perform malicious operations on behalf of the attacker, give the attacker access to sensitive information that the program stores on the filesystem, or enable a denial-of-service attack against the program We address vulnerabilities that affect each of the two groups of functions, and then we discuss more secure mechanisms for creating temporary files
